Jonathan Shahn’s wood figures embody the timeless calm of classical sculpture and the expressionistic energy of modernity. I think of Roman busts Jonathan Shahn’s wood figures embody the timeless calm of classical sculpture and the expressionistic energy of modernity. We think of Roman busts and Greek herms, as well as Brancusi and Baselitz. Their psychological depth calls to mind the work of Shahn’s father, Ben Shahn. And yet they are none of these. As we observe the figures, we feel that they, sighted or not, are aware of our gaze and know who we are. What is their relationship with Shahn?
