A Garden of Hope
Hope Cemetery in Barre, Vermont

by Karen Lane

pages: 16-19

On Sunday afternoons between the two world wars, the granite sculptors of Barre, Vermont, would stroll with their families through Hope Cemetery. Like painters visiting a gallery, they inspected one another's work, studying the styles of the sculptors and statue cutters, the techniques of the floral carvers, the skill of the letter cutters and the ingenuity of the designers.
