Boston's Outdoor Sculptural Garden: Forest Hills Cemetery
By Rebecca Reynolds
pages: 8-15

One of the great contributions of Victorian Boston to America’s cultural landscape was the rural cemetery. These “places of sleep” were, in effect, our nation’s first parks, where the public could seek inspiration and solace through the restorative effects of nature and beautiful monuments dedicated to the memory of loved ones and local heroes. Few people realize that these relatively recent sculptures were some of the earliest public monuments in the United States.
