Man and Horse In the Work of Anna Hyatt Huntington: Two Examples

The horse, perhaps more than any other animal, symbolizes the spirit of the universe. For thousands of years, the equine image has been linked to mankind. First as hunter, later as domesticator and partner, the horse’s long relationship with man is often celebrated as a powerful and complex image in art.
Twentieth-century artist Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876–1973) was known as a sculptor of animals and, in particular, of horses, her favorite subject. From her earliest days, she rode and later trained horses, so it was not surprising when she began to feature them as subjects in her sculpture. In her long and prolific career, Huntington created numerous equestrian compositions....
