Della Robbia Glazed Terracotta in Renaissance Art
by Laura Morelli

Luca della Robbia and his workshop occupy a unique place in the history of Italian Renaissance sculpture. At the precise historical moment when the concepts of "fine arts" (painting, sculpture, architecture) and "crafts" (ceramics, glass, metalwork) diverged in western thought, the della Robbia family managed to fuse the otherwise distinct roles of "artist" and "artisan".Their innovations in glazed architectural terracotta accounted for this fusion.
