Optimism in a Darkish Economy
by Wolfgang Mabry

Americans are running out of ways to describe the pervasiveness and extremity of the nation’s economic crisis of confidence as more citizens display less trust in the institutions that manage the flow of money, credit, and investments. With 70 percent of the economy driven by consumers, people who make and people who sell the things they make have had to ask the kind of questions that can lead to major changes in strategies for surviving, and maybe even thriving in unequivocally dismal economic conditions. There is little doubt that changes are occurring, the pace of change is accelerating, and, at some point, people in every echelon are affected. Everyone knows of established galleries going out of business or closing locations. Some foundries have seen empty wax rooms for the first time in memory.
