Renowned sculptor Richard McDermott Miller, a resident of New York City, died on December 25, 2004, at the age of 82. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
Miller was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and received his formal training at the Cleveland Institute of Art. In 1963, he discontinued his abstract sculpture to explore the human form and its countless ramifications. He eventually became known as the “Figure Sculptor of SoHo ” because of his role in the return of the human figure to contemporary art and because of the roots he established in downtown Manhattan more than four decades ago.
