Water, Its Source and Concept
Water movement controls our mood like the weather. It makes a statement deep in our emotions. Many artists use water to enhance a frame of mind. It might be a mere reflection, a mist, a spout, or a cascade. But water, in combination with its conceptthe source of lifebecomes a strong vehicle for expression. Take, for example, the Fontanella del Facchino in Rome. Moved in 1872 to its current location in via Lata, in 1751 the sculptural element within the fountain was attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti by Luigi Vanvitelli, noted engineer and architect who also worked on the construction of the Trevi fountain in Rome with Nicola Salvi. What remains with us of the expression is the mysticism and the enchanting beauty of a fountain. In a modern context, sculptor Juliet Hayson has created a vapor fountain, entitled Spring for the Jerwood Sculpture Park, on the grounds of Ragley, Warwickshire, in England. Inspired by the early fountains in Rome that depended on natural sources of water flow, she chose to use an aquifer close to the surface to feed the fountain, creating a natural mist of fine water vapor, an ephemeral experience.
Different approaches, different concepts behind the movement of water shape our mood and represent a source (Latin, fons) of prosperity, abundance, and survival itself, in my point of view.
