Point of View
by Giancarlo Biagi

Sculpture Review is planned and designed at the head office of the National Sculpture Society where the Editorial Board meets regularly. As you’ve noticed in the past years, the group is very tight and includes a variety of experts in the sculpture field. It is always very exciting to plan the issues. Each issue has a theme, and throughout the years we have addressed a variety of topics that capture the interest of a broad audience in the world of art—mainly figurative sculpture, as it is our preference and therefore our expertise and specialization. In planning this issue, we wanted to call attention to something extra involved in sculpting the animal figures. At the Board, I personally found very interesting the explanation that Dan Ostermiller gave—see the sidebar on this page.
The word “art” has many facets, and everyone has developed his or her own interpretation. Therefore, I am asking myself, When does the taxidermist end and the artist begin? At the Museum of Natural History in New York City, I see the work of many taxidermists. They tell me a lot about the animals but very little about the person who has created those images. When I see the work of Bugatti, Ostermiller, Ullberg, Rosetta, etc., I can feel the artists’ love for the animals. I can learn about the animals, but I also feel a sense of joy/love/expression imparted by the sculptor who created them. It is this imprint that is recognizable and traceable by viewers, in my point of view.
